I soon tired of having to pull my phone out to check progress or start and stop a ride so I started to research other options. The Garmin Edge 25 appealed to me due to its price, size, simplicity, battery life, ruggedness and ability to synchronise with Strava. It did not disappoint. The unit is easy to set up and configure and there are good options to customise its behaviour and display. I downloaded the Connect app on my iphone to do the initial registration and connection to Strava. Everything went without a hitch - having Bluetooth capability makes all the difference and I would recommend this model over its cheaper sibling (the 20) for this reason. The only problem I had was that sometimes the unit did not lock on to the satellite, particularly on cloudy days. I installed the Windows application on my PC, connected the unit via the USB cable and updated the software. This also went without a hitch and dramatically reduced the incidence of the problem: I'd recommend this step to new owners as a matter of course. In practice, the unit is fantastic. Speed, distance, time and ascent can be displayed in real time. The unit automatically pauses when you do which saves having to remember to turn it back on again. If the iphone app is set for background refresh then ride data will be automatically synced with the phone when the ride ends. The icing on the cake is that if someone sends you a text when you are riding it appears on the screen. You can't reply via the device (not recommended anyway) but I find this a useful feature. An incoming call will also cause a message to be displayed.I haven't used the guidence feature but if I needed this then I would probably either opt for a model with a larger screen or buy a waterproof mount for my phone.
